BACKGROUND
Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken is a well-known, industry-leading brand. From humble beginnings with one store in Pretoria, the company started growing exponentially after they began franchising in 1998 and today Barcelos boasts an international footprint of over 100 outlets in more than 17 countries. The founders of the brand are all still actively involved in the daily operations of the company, ensuring continuity and excellence throughout the brand.

THE CONCEPT
The Barcelos quick-service restaurants’ speciality is Portuguese-inspired, traditional, healthy and scrumptious flame grilled chicken and whether patrons are in need of a quick meal or sit-down dinner, the Barcelos menu has been carefully designed to cater to both these desires.

Prepared as authentically as it was mastered by the Portuguese hundreds of years ago, the Barcelos recipes have been passed down through generations and are still their best kept secret. Their mouth-watering marinades are blended from a variety of tantalising spices combined with various strengths of Peri-Peri, fresh chillies and the legendary Bird's Eye Chilli. Patrons have a choice of Tangy Lemon, Mild Peri, Veri Peri and for the super daring and hot-spirited individuals, there is Barcelos'  famous Supa Peri marinade.

In addition to their popular chicken burgers, their menu includes a variety of other meals such as kebabs, schwarmas, crispy French fries, garlic rolls, stir-fries and salads. A kiddies meal section is also included in the menu.

The Barcelos target market lies within the 5 to 9 LSM bracket and their price range fills the niche between the fast-food and casual dining (quick service) restaurant rates.

FRANCHISOR SUPPORT
The South African market is served from their head office located in Centurion and their national distribution centres in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. The franchisor assumes responsibility for the internal logistics and distribution network that co-ordinates delivery of licensed products from their manufacturing facilities to the individual outlets.

All franchisees and staff are trained under the watchful eye of the franchisor at their internal training academy in Centurion.

Barcelos strongly advocates owner-operated franchise outlets with franchisees willing to abide by the national operating standards prescribed by the franchisor. The ideal Barcelos franchisee is a service-orientated individual who believes in a pro-active approach.
